Customs and Traditions
Settlers switched to driving on the right-hand side of the road in North America because early Conestoga wagons tended to drift to the right into traffic. Many of the practices which originated in the days of the early settlers are still familiar to us today while some have died out with the advancement of knowledge. Children will be fascinated by:
• a world where the blacksmith was also the dentist and the barber was also the bloodletter
• the ways in which the settlers preserved history and predicted the weather
• customs for celebrating such events as courtship, weddings, holidays, and the harvest
