Booklist - Colorado
Crisp photos of the titular state’s iconic mountains are a particularly appealing feature of this entry in the My State series (20 titles), which aims to introduce basic state facts as well as conventional nonfiction components to emerging readers. A cartoon kid, Jake, takes readers around the Centennial State sharing such tidbits as “the Rocky Mountain Columbine is the state flower” and “we grow a lot of potatoes.” The facts selected are a little shallow—for instance, “there are four national sports teams in Colorado” doesn’t say what those teams are—and tend to focus more on tourist attractions than history, but the easy-to-read pages, bright visuals, and large font size make this a solid pick for little ones learning about how to read informational texts. An index, glossary, and guided questions bolster the learning.
My State series - School Library Journal, Spring 2023 Series Made Simple
Highly recommended for public and school libraries. Ask students which states or places they would like to visit and why.
